Gigabyte GA-X99-SOC champion

Post #1 by Arne Saknussemm » Tue May 12, 2015 9:25 pm

OK this board intrigues me....I like the fact it has only 4 ram slots...kind of stripped down....the trace tech sounds good etc. has a high pin count socket that seems to enable 3400MHz ram...

Anyone tried one? does it OC cache as well or better than the RVE? Gigabyte any good?

Thoughts? recommendations?

1000 extra points in Vantage? :D

I don't think there's much point in changing from your Rampage, but if you were buying a new board, it would be my go to board. I'm eyeing up one myself, but not just yet.

I'd usually think the same but I can get one for 290 euros ...I could probably sell the RVE for that...but I don't know anything about their BIOS or the quality? it's like 150 euros less than the RVE and that makes me wonder about " you get what you pay for"...

I have to say the RVE has been fantastic....even better than the X79 RIVE...

It's the board of choice for most of the top overclockers right now, if you take a look at the top scores with the 5960X almost all are with the SOC Champion.

It is the number one choice. It's more efficient and almost half the price of a Rampage. :D

My main criticism in my review was that for $40 less, they'd have stormed through the X99 OC market and you wouldn't be asking. :D

Is it an exact copy of the ASUS OC socket?

OK....so, I'm so intrigued by the board and the marketing and the wild rumours floating about...I've ordered one to test...head to head with my RVE which is going to take some beating...

ROG lost a friend...will they also lose a customer?

Loser gets Ebayd

I would be keen to take the looser on if you do not mind, the team does need more X99 boards as the MSI ones I have here two of the four got killed at the meet.

OK you get first refusal :)

Snag hit here though....they just wrote back saying they went to the crate to send me one and the boards turn out to be FORCE not CHAMPION so now I am kind of waiting to see if/when they get the right board... :|

Have you done some base benchmarks Arne, i'd be very interested to see the results with both boards.
Would be nice to see something like Wprime 1024 at stock, 4 & 4.5ghz with 2x sets of ram timings XMP and also the 2666cas12 1.5v profile, this should give a fair indication of efficiency between the 2 boards.

No not yet...I've just got a new CPU so I have to work out lowest voltages for a few different OCs on the RVE and then see if they repeat or better on the Gigabyte...

Will have to push the RAM in some way to see if there is some appreciable difference...will give it some thought and get busy...

I am a bit loathe to buy 3400 or 3666 RAM just to see if that is the only difference between the boards...

OK so it arrived....first non ASUS board for ages....first non ROG board for ages

Image

The box it comes in is not a ROG box...not the same quality and inside there is no OC panel (think there is something separate you can buy) not the same quantity of gear you get with a ROG board...less sata cables but all the SLI bridges which was a worry for a second until you pick up the board and then that looks like a quality item....heavy like a quality board....looks well built!

Image

The first RAM slots are no closer to the CPU than the RVE just the RVE has the black sockets closest which you don't use and then has the second rank of red slots way on the outside of the spread....

Image

And the orange is not as bad as I feared :P

I have quite a few Lanparty boards that look pretty sad and faded now for the same reason.
