Soldering equipment and materials for simple vmods.

Post #1 by Luumi » Thu Aug 20, 2015 7:52 pm

Hi people.

I would like to share you some great valuable soldering tools to make legacy video card vmods easier. Many of us may not have the need or will to spend a lot of money on too overkill equipment which may not have too much use in the end to make up their big cost.

A simple but decent enough 2 in 1 soldering station with both hot air and normal soldering iron. This what I use along my Hakko FX-888 station to mod most of my cards and other stuff. Trust me its enough for many volt mods and cheap for you UK guys as euro is weak.

A lot of simple 2 pin cables where to plug variable resistors aka trimpots. This is so smooth way to mod cards as you can instantly make the card stock or modded. Nowadays I don't plug VRs to mod points at all without using these, much more safer as well. Buy a lot of these as they are so cheap.

Set of different sized trimpots. Common applications range from 100 ohms to 500komhs. This box contains all really.

High quality capacitors with a lot of capacitance to smooth out vdroops. 2.5V and 6.3V caps are used the most. You can buy 16V caps aswell if you need capacitors for input:

Multicore flux <0.5mm solder with the best metal alloy in my opinion for SMD and that is 63/37. Obviously you can grab such at almost any hardware store but I just linked it here if someone is interested.

Decent enough multimeter is obviously needed. Get a good known brand to get reliable values, but I know the high-end flukes arent cheap and it feels quite annoying as an amateur user to spend 300+ dollars on a single multimeter, but when looking at the reviews the chinese model 17B Fluke has done some really good job. I would personally grab that one:

I would like others to share some great deals on good equipment aswell, I'm currently looking for decent 150W output iron but station ones are really expensive.

Geforce 9800 GTX + e-power zombie.

Confirmed working, now just needs a few 2.5V caps and 2 more power wires and even the highest voltages should be rock stable.

That is some old cable I found on the floor of our old outside sauna. It had layed there for 15 years in birds' dirt :D.

I dont know but it is rated for 30A I believe. Yes it most likely is expensive but luckily I still have some of it.

You will need a 4mm2(Awg 11) cable for 30 ampere or 6mm2(Awg 9) for 40 ampere. This cable should be found in most building stores in meter price. If you have a old (scrap) car you might find this cable size conecting the generator on the engine.

@Lummi

Nice evga powerboard. I might order 2 of these for older cards. I already have 4 Evc for the fury:s

The fail with epower is that you need to saw the edge of it to utilize all copper layers.
