As per title.. I just wondered if anyone has their Windows setup using UEFI?

The reason I ask is i've seen no real benefit between uefi and legacy and on my last clean install I didn't bother.. The reason I ask is some guy on ocuk was asking as he was rather paranoid that he hadn't setup uefi..

you can check this by typing MSINFO32 in the search bar and press enter.

look for an entry that says BIOS mode.. should be under system summary (first screen).. it should state either legacy or UEFI .

yes when possible allways, but not with WIN 7 as it cannot be used with bios csm disabled
with 8 /8.1/10 yes allways
rufus is very good to prepare the usb install media in uefi

But you do not need to disable CSM to install Win 7 in UEFI mode

but uefi should be installed with csm disabled
win 7 is not prepared for that as it is not as good as 8 /8.1 /10 for ssd /m.2 /nvme /pcie ssd's
i know the big love for 7 around the world, but thats what it is and soon the new systems wont work with it any more (only with special mods)

If you have one of the early Win7 images, like pre-SP1, they can only be installed legacy only. The OS has to have the right files for UEFI install.

Basically you have to install your OS in UEFI mode to get it to work.
So when you boot from single device on install, it has to be the 'UEFI:' version of your USB stick/DVD.

The main thing was that with UEFI mode, if you have a compatible GPU, then Win8 and Win10 should boot a lot faster. That means both POST faster and load the OS quicker.

The only downside is that in this mode, you have to enter the 'BIOS' through software (like GIGABYTE Fast Boot, MSI Boot to BIOS) or press things like the direct key header on ASUS (or reset the BIOS completely).

So if you can't get into BIOS by pressing F2 from a cold boot, then you're in UEFI boot mode.

Exactly had this problem last night trying to install Win7 (sp1), basically going through install to the point of choosing where to install windows it wouldnt let me as my ssd was set in MBR and UEFI uses the GPT format so every time I reset and started mashing delete / F2 to try get back into bios it just would not enter. Basically the only way to get into bios was through hitting the cmos reset but then it still took a few attempts to figure out exactly how I needed the CSM setting and the correct boot order with UEFI DVD drive and harddrives or normal because it would either still boot in UEFI mode and then not recognize my boot drive or boot and recognize the drive but still say it needed GPT partition table.. at which point I was back to trying to get into bios again :p

I'm on Legacy, can't have ever used UEFI so can't comment on differences
