Windows 10

Post #1 by Arne Saknussemm » Sun May 03, 2015 12:52 pm

Windows 10 first impressions:

Not great I have to say. Before I start I'll say I am no Luddite...love new tech new OSes etc...took to win 8 fine despite changes etc.

But...

WTF is wrong with Microsoft? Seems like they are running around with their heads firmly where the sun don't shine...focus group decision making reacting to reviews...

Windows 10 is supposed to be an OS for all platforms....OK...but that doesn't mean it has to be the same interface and features on each platform does it? I can't believe the shoddy interface...it's just a reactionary "OK people didn't like Win 8 so we'll give them both win 7 and 8 together side by side...they'll love it!"

Utterly mad!...ends up being neither win 7 which desktop PC users liked nor win 8 which was no doubt quite handy on a tablet etc.

I really thought on install, the first thing it would ask me was are you installing on PC tablet or phone and then it would optimize for that platform....how hard can that be?

Also, I don't know if it's just preview conditions but you had to sign in to Microsoft account again something they dropped in 8.1 for obvious reasons...and this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as rape of your privacy is concerned. It is just chock full of "tracking your every move to offer you the best service"....translation...NSA level spyware designed at targeting sh*t to sell you. It is horrible.

I had better be able to strip Cortana etc out in the final build and not have it on my task-bar permanently...can't get rid of it in trial build...

The good...felt really snappy both booting and general day to day stuff...I swear web pages loaded quicker etc...it will be good for gaming if they sort DX12 out and it gets used

But has a way to go for me to be happy with it...I want to uninstall all the useless apps...don't want to sign in to an MS account...don't want my every click to be recorded and sent off....my position tracked...and I don't want it to be the same OS on every device...I want it tailored...and I want it optimized for desktop PC above all!

The only way to go with that is.. To rip the OS to pieces and create a custom "unattended" version for personal use. Although if tis going to be a tough Cookie like in W8 and W8, it might take sometime to get rid of it all. But persistence pays off. I have successfully cracked the first W10 release, haven't tried again (its boring and meticulous work).
As for a snappier system response, I think it doesn't differ much from W8.1 (I have been using that for quite some time and really happy with it!)

Spoiler alert was really an alert here. Kind of glad I am old, big brother owns us all, no mater what we do, feel kind of sorry for the younger folk who never knew what having freedom was like cause it is gone forever, at least until after the apocalypse. I told my son there was a new Mad Max movie coming out, he said "who", I didn't realize how long it's been

Yeah, I saw that added new game and rolled my eyes when I saw a link to an article about it. You know what Micro$haft needs to do? they need to bring back the customizable install routine so we have control over what gets installed, rather than M$ forcing crap down our throats that we don't want or need....and we'll finally see Windoze installs of the slimmer variety.
