Anti Virus software - reccomendations

Post #1 by Supreme » Wed Oct 29, 2014 3:47 pm

Currently use free version of AVG but interested to hear what people use and if anyone recommends anything different.

Not interested in paying for anything (hence the free option I'm using). Not really clued up on AV software so no idea how good/bad AVG, not having any real problems with it but wouldn't mind trying out a few others.

If you have a legit copy of Windows then Microsoft Security Essentials
If you have a hooky copy then you won't be able to use MSE and in that case I'd recommend AVG Free.
Use Malwarebytes only when you have an issue, I think you need a pro copy of this for the AVG/MSE style live scanning (though I need to check to be sure). Malwarebytes picks up far more than MSE or AVG and is my go to Antivirus for nasty ones like the Met virus (safe mode though for that, then restart, update and scan again.)

Definitely MSE if you can, it's much less of a resource hog than AVG.

MB is Antimalware so does not do or claim to do the same as AV.

I run ESET ESS 8.0 and MB 2.3, I was lucky (for once) to get the lifetime deal right before they ended it) and then new version 2.0 came out so I am on that.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, if you have Windows 8\8.1, I think it's built into the os, Windows 7 will let you install it, Windows 8\8.1 will just say theres a newer version or this is already installed when you go to install it, My vote is MSE, not ever had a problem with it :)

I agree MSE is best free option IMO for all round use vs less of a resource hog.

Windows 8 built in Defender is exactly the same as latest MSE and for this reason you cannot install MSE on Windows 8.

I would never touch free or paid for AVG or Avast.

Thanks everyone - looks like MSE is the clear winner so will download tonight.

I have a legit copy of Windows (8.1 I think) so should have no problems.

You do not need download or do anything in that case, Windows 8.1 has Defender (MSE for non Win 8 OS) built into it.

Ah ok - does it need 'turning on' or activating or anything then?

It is on by default until you install a 3rd party AV then it disables itself.

It updates with Windows Update (so each time you start your PC) and I assume it will update while PC is running periodically.

You can also check for updates manually within its GUI.

Just check in the Windows Action Centre > Security and make sure all options are showing as ON/OK.

Up to a while ago I would have said avast but that's gone all weird as they have started to push their free edition towards buying and got on my nerves. Currently use MS security essentials.

Also MSE for me. I have used it since Windows 7. Great program and runs very quietly and uses very little resources.

Yes, I just run windows defender and stay off dodgy sites...I also regularly secure erase and clean install my OS so I don't need to spend money or worry really... :)

I agree about malwarebytes. I had some spam virus that took over chrome and bombarded me with spam adverts and Malwarebytes picked it up but didn't clean it. I had to manually remove the bugger and touch wood, that sorted it. Might have to try that Super Anti Spyware next time.

Did you bother to send info to MB so it can be fixed by next update?

They all miss some things that others do not and vice versa.

Not running any antivirus, perhaps I should. Reinstall a few times a week anyways :)

Used to run nod32, worked great.
