Post #1 by setter » Thu Oct 22, 2015 11:41 pm

New to this platform guys, looking for some advice. All ive done so far is enable XMP which sets strap to 125. Is it just basically multi and vcore after that? Parts consist of.

Msi X99 mpower s
16gb gskill ripjaw 4 3000mhz c15

Air cooled with an alpenfohn k2 with dual 2350 rpm corsair sp pwm fans. Cheers for any advice guys.

Basically yeah and input volts, has your board got the OC socket?? Otherwise your cache will be limited, just concentrate on core 1st, when you find your temp limit try adding a bit more cache V which can also stabilise your core clocks a bit. Experiment with straps and mem frequency, faster isn't always better on X99, your CPU may be more comfatable on 100 strap with 2666 mems and once tightened down will be more efficient than XMP.

Cheers Nick, indeed no oc socket on this board. So input voltage is pretty much the same then as standard haswell. On it with all my chips I was advised that input should be around 0.5v higher than vcore. Ie on my last 4790k, 1.300v, 1.800 input.

It's a little different on X99, but for a 24/7 system I wouldn't imagine you'd need much more than 1.9v VCCIN so that should be plenty. I would probably set it at that and see where you can go.

Is it a known issue trying to run 3000mhz ram on a non oc socket board? At stock cpu speed or oc'd with xmp enabled, im getting freezes in games. Dropped the ram speed down to 2666mhz and so far no issues.

I can't remember where you were likely to get issues without the OC socket but it was a little over the 3000MHz mark yes.

You won't see any huge increases by having the ram above 2666 anyway so I'd keep it at that.

Thought as much mate. Cheers. Just need to crack on with the CPU now. Done a bit of quick testing at 36x125 but using auto voltage. Peaks at 1.322 at load. Will see how it fares with manual settings. One core spiking to 83c under XTU, rest mid 70's.

Updating to the latest bios seems to have cured the freezing in game issue. Ram now back at 3000mhz.
