5870 tweaking etc

Post #1 by nickolp1974 » Sat Nov 08, 2014 8:48 pm

Got 2 asus 5870's delivered today 1 of which has voltage control not sure of model number but its this one http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... k_view.jpg

Now the other the voltage is blanked out http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4 ... SY300_.jpg this has a 6&8 pin,

No idea with these cards the one with voltage will do 1050/1350 at 1.25v
Other one does 1000/1300 at stock volts
The above clocks were in Hwbots heavenX
Only used afterburner.

So for those that know before i attempt any hard mods what can be done with these?? Bios, right tools etc, can put 1 under water for now just wanted to see how far they go with whats available first.

Could i save the unlocked bios and flash to the other??

Thanks

Think that the AMD GPUtool for 5870 has been posted. Will look on my hard drive and upload again. Plus the MSI unlocked bios that you will need. https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=26aaa818 ... 1D85%21178

Check and see what voltage controller the two cards have.

Nick you need a portable USB HDD between 320GB and 500GB the pocket kind, does the job perfectly and does not take up much space. I just use drives I pull out of laptops and stick them in factors I buy from the web.

The trick is having a good filing system on the Hard Drive. So I break it up into VGA drivers then one file with nVid and one for AMD.
3D benchmarks
2D benchmark
Tools (further broken up to 2D and 3D) with the general tools in the root folder.
Last folder is for your notes.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/DIGIFLEX-Drive- ... +HDD+drive

I have about four of these floating around.

Now on to the VGA.

Save your bios or at least know what bios you have or had in the cards. All the bios's are available for download so no big deal if you lost it or did not save it. techpowerup have a good repository for vga bios.

Now Clare is correct you need to work out which controller your card have ideally you will want to have the same controller on both cards.

Try this version of AB, it will give you up to 1.6Vgpu, at least works on ref cards.

The second card is an Asus Matrix. It came clocked higher and had more volts going through it at stock. For overclocking it should be the better card, but as we know it's all down to what the core and memory controller can do.

Wow just tried that and it works, better slap a block on it! Presuming ocp may be a limiting factor?

5870's don't have OCP or OVP problems, I think you can even run really high volts through them on LN2 w/o mods.

It's all about finding one that clocks high :)

Another piece of software you could use is GPU Tool. Works a treat with those volterra controllers on the reference models.

because the software Asus for this gpu does not work (asus tracker2)
I can use originel stockcooler or a gpu watercool block

Cooling is a big plus for these cards.

Yeah my water was at about 12c to get 1160, i'd have to stockpile ice of the machine for 3-4 days to get temps closer to zero
